Completed in 1786, the St. Michaelis Church is one of the largest and most important churches in Hamburg. Over the main entrance is the famous statue titled “Victory over the Devil”. It’s the one on all the postcards.
While walking around trying to find new angles to photograph this stunning statue (and killing time until the church opened), I found this one:
Click on the picture to see an enlarged image. The look on the devil’s appears to be FEAR. What a masterpiece! It must have been even more amazing before acid rain turned the copper green.
